George Walton was baptised at Christ Church, Sparkbrook, on 4th February 1891, the son of fitter Charles Walton and of charwoman Minnie Finemore, daughter of a wireworker. (The alternative spellings of his middle name occur throughout available documents). One of eight children, George lived with his family at 17, Turner Street, and then at 80, Larches Road. George worked as a grocer’s assistant.

On 15th June 1916, tanks were first used by the British on the Western Front. At this time also Private George Walton was wounded. He died of his wounds on the 16th September.

George Walton is buried in La Neuville British Cemetery in Corbie. The inscription on the gravestone reads: FAREWELL BUT NEAR OUR HEARTS WE HAVE YOU YET.
