Arthur’s Uncle Edgar was a professional soldier, who had served in the Grenadier Guards as a young man, and who was recalled to the colours to fight in the Boer War. From the age of 18, Edgar gave his permanent address as 69, Beach Road in Sparkhill, and this is where Arthur Radclyffe and his family were living in1918.
Arthur Holman Radclyffe was the son of clerk Arthur Douglas Radclyffe and of Maud Mary Holman. Born at 28, Grafton Road, Arthur was baptised at Holy Trinity, Bordesley Green on 19th July 1896. He became a boy clerk in the Post Office.
Arthur joined the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and was transferred to the Berkshire Regiment, gaining promotion to Serjeant. He was killed in action at Gavrelle in Northern France, on 21st September 1918.
